How It Began

It all started when my son, Matthew was in elementary school and he didn’t have many friends. One day, there was a neighbor who was allergic to her daughter’s guinea pigs Brittany and Megan. She asked us if we wanted two female guinea pigs and we decided to adopt them and make them part of our family.

As it turned out, our neighbor few doors down a girl named Taylor had a guinea pig as well, named whiskers.  Taylor and Matthew started hanging out together with the guinea pigs and more neighborhood children joined in the fun and were hanging out with the guinea pigs as well.

Many great memories and friendships were forged through these cute guinea pigs.

I was a home health aide for a client who had multiple sclerosis and she purchased two female guinea pigs named Sunshine and Lucy. I would bring them over to visit her and her family. The family and the children really enjoyed the guinea pigs.

My guinea pigs were great comforters when I lost eight loved ones. They certainly put a smile on my face when I was sad and heart broken.

I worked at an adult day program as a nurse and a client’s caregiver was asking the staff if anyone wanted two male guinea pigs. I responded yes, I would love to have the guinea pigs. The vet would later inform me they were in fact females. So I did rename them, but loved them all the same.

I would bring the guinea pigs to the day program so the clients and life skill coordinators can enjoy them. It was beautiful to see how the guinea pigs were bringing people together and how the guinea pigs were bonding with the clients as well as the staff.

I had a neighbor friend named Butch who never thought he would love guinea pigs as much he loved cats. Come to find out he would enjoy holding them and talking to them. They would love up on him and sitting comfortably with him.

When he was really upset about things, I would hand him a guinea pig to hold and pet them. I notice they calm him down right away and helped keep him cool and collected...

I was at a campus animal hospital with my guinea pig Lucille for a UTI and there was a young lady who needed much encouragement.

My gut was telling me to bring Lucille to her to cheer her up. So, I brought her to the young lady and I notice that Lucille had brightened her day as well as lifted her spirits.

I saw the evidence of how these beautiful guinea pigs have made a profound impact in people’s lives through helping individuals make friends, bring joy and comfort in a time of need, calming people and making individuals feel special and loved.

That’s when I decided to have my guinea pigs to be minister to the people to bring comfort, joy, healing and cheer.

Animal-Assisted Activity

Social, Recreational, Motivational

We are a business in the Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) branch of Pet Therapy. AAA can be for both the healthy and the sick. It is an informal visit, where groups such as a nursery school class or nursing home residents, learn about pets and interact with them.

Petting guinea pigs and observing their quirky behaviors is therapeutic to the soul, and promotes discussion with others.
